Please check out this “hot off the press” video just released by the United Church of Christ. We would love to hear what you think of it! Post your comments and start the conversation!

Food for thought:

What images from “The Language of God”
most vividly caught your attention? Why do

you think they were memorable? Were any

images confusing, troublesome or especially

meaningful to you? Why?

How do you perceive or experience God

speaking in the world?

What is distinctive about the United Church

of Christ’s emphasis on a Stillspeaking

God? What does the UCC’s phrase “God

is still speaking” mean to you?

I LOVE that video-I am always trying to come up with an “easy” way to describe our religion-what that video does it “show” what our religion is all about-I love that it shows our diversity and our open hearts-
My favorite image are during the “love”portion-and I like the last image of the video too with the older women and younger woman smiling together

Hi Meredith, great to see your blog.

I thought the video was okay. I felt as though some of the photos were shareware which I’m not as fond of. I guess I’m trying to understand who the audience is for this? Is it to atract new people to UCC? If so, I would suggest a more cause focused approach and a less denominationally defined approach. Younger generations are not as institutionally focused as their elders thus inviting people because we are UCC does not mean as much to most people as it may have in the past.

Perhaps I’m missing the purpose… hope this helps! Marv

I guess I just do not like commercials…this did not move me…if anything probably the wrong way. But we are all different….good thing!

This type of presentation technique is used by many organizations and each time I see it used I have the same reaction….sorry, but it does not speak to me.
I have seen it used….albeit sometimes at a slower pace…by various military branches, colleges and universities, and some corporate advertising.
In total it is just bunch of disparate photos flashed on a for a nanosecond with no chance to ponder the meaning of any of them.
Reminds me of Sesame Street …flashing big letters and numbers….good technique for teaching recognition of alphabet characters but not very useful in messaging more complex ideas.
Although I have not formally studied this, from a marketing perspective I presume the hope is that the viewer will lock onto an image of interest and remember it.
In general, for the casual observer I think any meaning one photo might have is almost immediately erased by the next image…unless a really meaningful image pops up to grab the viewers attention such that everything else that might be communicated is blocked.
If this does happen, the advertiser had better hope the viewer connected with a positive image or risk turning them off altogether if a negative image is recalled.
Not a very effective communication technique…and potentially risky if negative images and controversy is created.
They need to go back to the drawing board.

I thought the actual film was very good at expressing the openness, however the music was very dark and dramatic… it seemed to make the message grave, rather than open and inviting. Just my 2 cents.

This may not move others to consider the UCC, but I found myself being very proud to be a UCCer at a time when so many “religions” are still turning people away. Christ was inclusive – shouldn’t we all be?
